What are cloud services?
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about cloud services and the cloud, many are lost, because they do not fully understand what is at stake.
By cloud services or cloud storage it is customary to understand the service of providing an organization with a separate space for a user to store various files. It can be as documents, media files, an archive of photos, in general any files necessary for the user. Many users are often content with a place that is allocated free by similar organizations.
The size of this space depends on the particular company and is often associated with marketing goals. To exchange files with the cloud storage, it is enough to install a small application on the computer through which you can both upload files to the “cloud”, download files, and delete them.
By the way, you can use cloud storage directly through the web interface, that is, through the browser, but this is often not convenient for various reasons. In addition, synchronization with storage is also possible via smartphones, which is convenient when you need quick access to a particular file. Some applications today also work through storage, a striking example is the Google Docs service, because to work in it does not require an installed Office application from Microsoft. Android-based smartphones, for example, can also be used as a player for audio files from the user’s cloud storage, a similar thing can be compared to online radio. Game services related to cloud storages began to appear, but so far there are a lot of complaints about them, often due to the requirement to have a high data transfer speed (1-2 Mbit / s) and a stable Internet connection on the user’s machine. Nevertheless, of course, the future of the gaming industry is behind such services.
Among the advantages of cloud services, convenience and quick access to data are always highlighted, the main thing is the presence of the Internet. Cloud storage is often used as a backup storage of your own website or family photo archive. After all, hard drives, flash drives, etc. are not so reliable, and having a copy of important and difficult to recover information is always useful at hand. In addition, many cloud services offer the possibility of the so-called “online link”, that is, sending a link to a file in the storage to another user who does not need to download the file to his computer, and see the necessary file in the storage itself.
With the advent of cloud services, the critical dependence on the operation of the hard drive has disappeared, because if it fails, copies of the files can always be taken from the cloud storage. With the increase in the number of these same services, competition between them also grows, usually in such conditions the end user – the user wins. Competition forces companies to focus on the quality and low cost of their services. As for paid services, most cloud services make money on paid accounts, that is, users who need a lot of space to store their files. Such users pay a monthly fee, a certain tariff for additional space in the cloud storage.
Some users keep accounts on several cloud services. This is rarely associated with greed and some selfish reasons, it is often necessary for the reasons that a particular cloud service is suitable for some purposes, and not at all suitable for others. For example, the convenient client of one service allows the user to keep one cloud service both at home and at work, as a frequently used storage, and the high data transfer speed of another service allows for quick file sharing for working with clients, which affects the efficiency of working time, etc. .P.
Among the shortcomings of cloud services, it is traditionally singled out as the main negative point – the need for an Internet connection in the place where it is supposed to work with cloud storage (home, work, trip, cafe, etc.). Moreover, the presence of the Internet is necessary both for uploading or transferring files to the cloud storage, and for downloading or viewing storage files. In addition, another point is critical – the stability of the Internet connection, because in the case of transferring large files due to unstable communication, you can incorrectly receive or transfer the file to the storage. But many cloud services usually support downloading files, and modern browsers generally have wide functionality. Another cloud storage problem has already been mentioned in passing: it happens that the space provided for free ends up, so you have to shell out a paid account or alternative options: deleting something, transferring files to another “cloud”, etc.
In general, cloud services have already tightly entered the lives of many users, like once flash drives, as a way to store data. Therefore, if you predict the development of cloud services, the picture is drawn mainly in bright colors: an increase in subscribers, an increase in service capabilities, the transfer of game servers to the “cloud”
